Get to know your skin type.Knowing what kind of skin you have will help you choose the most effective products. Ask your dermatologist or a facialist if you’re not sure what type you are. You may find that your skin needs are different from day to day, so keep an eye on any changes.
Double cleanse your face.Many people discover that doing this makes a huge difference in the clarity of their skin. It did for me. After reading The Little Book of Skin Care by Charlotte Cho (I’ll probably reference this book many times in later posts!), I was inspired to try this technique, and have never looked back. First, take off any eye makeup gently with a makeup remover. I also like to use cleansing wipes by YES to Coconut to remove lipstick and surface impurities. Next, massage your dry face with an oil cleanser. The one by Burt’s Bees is great. Rinse it off, and get ready to wash again. In the morning, my second cleanser is CeraVe's Hydrating Cleanser. At night, I like to use Olay Daily Facial Cloths because they are a little more exfoliating. Your skin should never feel uncomfortable or tight after double cleansing. If you have any particular skin issues and are concerned about trying it, check with your dermatologist first.
Cut out sugar.I’m not always good about this one. Sour candy is my kryptonite. The less I eat of it, though, the better my skin looks. Eating a lot of sugar triggers a process called glycation. This is when digested sugar attaches to the collagen in your skin, resulting in wrinkles and sagging.
Get enough sleep.You know how great sleep is for you, I’m sure. I do, too. However, I’m a night owl. Knowing this about myself, I try not to stress out if I haven’t gotten a perfect 8-hour night, and instead do my best to follow the rest of the steps on this list.
Work up a sweat.I’ve gotten into going to the gym. For one, it’s across the street, and I really have no excuse not to go. I think what’s been keeping my workouts consistent, though, is that I rarely get breakouts now that I've started doing this. This might be because exercise decreases stress, or because it improves blood circulation, which helps carry away cell waste.
Limit alcohol intake.I enjoy a good beer, but since alcohol is dehydrating and dries out skin, I don’t drink it very much. Water, green tea, and low-sugar kombucha are my mainstays.
Try a multi-step process.You’re busy, and probably want your skincare routine to be on the quick side. However, adding things like a serum or a toner (or both), can be very positive for your skin health. I will do a full post on this in the future!
Use masks often.An NYU dermatologist told me this tip recently, and I’m liking it a lot. I used to do a mask maybe once a week. Now, depending on my skin's condition, I may use one every day. I usually do a mask made of plain Greek yogurt, or a honey mask from Sephora's brand. Gentle masks like those keep your skin under control, and you should be fine to use them regularly. However, stop usage if you're having any adverse reactions.
Wash your pillowcases 1-2 times a week.Keeping your sheets clean of dirt, hair product, etc. will keep your skin clear, as well.
